Connected Kids
Connected Kids: Safe, Strong, Secure is
a new American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) program that strives
to empower families to raise children that are resilient to youth
violence and child abuse. Extensive research, including
focus groups with parents around the country, suggested that
the most effective approach to these critical areas would be
a positive one, an approach that supports the alliance between
parents and pediatricians by providing specific, important advice
about children and families throughout childhood.
In Orange County, the California Chapter 4,
AAP (CA4, AAP) Injury and Violence Prevention Program is training
pediatricians, other health professionals and human service providers
to implement this asset-based program in their practices or organizations. Like
the National AAP The Injury Prevention Program (TIPP), Connected
Kids coordinates counseling topics such as parenting, child
discipline, television violence, and bullying with scheduled
health maintenance visits based upon children’s developmental
stages. Connected
Kids supports these topics with counseling suggestions and
take-home materials for parents and youth.

Connected Kids Goes to School
CA4, AAP was awarded the American Academy of
Pediatrics, Healthy People 2010 Grant that has enabled us to expand Connected
Kids into
the school environment to reach school-age children
and adolescents by training school professionals and developing an
implementation guide for Connected Kids in the school setting,
targeting school nurses, counselors, teachers, peer educators, and
after-school program educators. Bring Connected Kids to
the school setting offers us an opportunity to reach older children,
who are less frequent visitors to pediatricians compared to the preschool
age children.
